Near misses that have involved rope rescue/rappelling training are the focus. Safety is always paramount when it comes to training, and instructors should have full control over training to ensure health and safety. Even the best plan has hazards, and occasionally firefighters get injured in training. However, if you look at some of the near miss investigations, you will see that many of the injuries were preventable. Topics include case histories covering near misses, the use of live victims in training, modifying a training plan or moving away from the “normal” training or drill plan to try a new approach, conducting a proper risk assessment for the given training, and the pros and cons of changing a lesson plan “on the fly.” Participants are encouraged to review their department standard operating procedures and revise them if necessary.
