A high intelligence quotient (IQ) is touted as being predictive of positive outcomes such as educational success and higher socioeconomic status. Yet, less is understood about high IQ as a potential risk factor. In this session, Ruth shares the important findings of her recent research involving more than 5,000 participants from American Mensa. Each member responded to a survey which helped to examine a potential relationship between high cognitive ability and various psychological and/or physiological overexcitabilities. They were asked to self-report prevalence of mood and anxiety disorders, as well as conditions involving immune and inflammatory dysregulations including allergies, asthma, auto-immune disease, and autism. These responses were then compared to national averages. She discusses the significance of the surprising results of this study and how they may be relevant to you or someone you know.
