In niche markets, special circumstances allow new technologies to compete with conventional energy sources while the unit price of the power from the new technology is still higher than the general market price. Using examples from developed and developing projects, such as isolated Alaskan villages and desalinization work, this session will explore the benefits, viability and potential of this niche market concept, lessons to be derived from niche market projects, the role of these opportunities in technology development and advancement, and what technology readiness levels fit these niches.
