Tracks: Behavior

Questions regarding the effectiveness of out-of-school suspensions, responses to student behavior, and the disproportionate impact of zero-tolerance policies on students of color, individuals with disabilities, and other marginalized groups have prompted districts to explore schoolwide restorative justice approaches to student discipline. Attorney William Zee will explore how the implementation of restorative practices intersects with legal responsibilities to students with disabilities and the types of adaptations necessary to ensure program effectiveness. He’ll provide resources to assist with program implementation, identify key stakeholders that must be involved, and point out the strengths and weaknesses associated with implementation. Take away an in-depth understanding of how restorative practices can reduce the impact of exclusionary discipline and tips on how they can be applied to support and align with a student’s IEP.
