In peacetime, the DoD tends to operate as a plodding, inflexible bureaucracy. But in wartime, it can adapt and adopt organizational change with startling speed. And while the DoD spends more on R&D than Facebook, Google and Disney combined, our national security is challenged daily by agile, creative adversaries that we are slow to understand, synthesize and counteract. Terrorists crowdsource designs and buy materials from eBay, while DoD defaults to long procurement cycles and traditional contractors. So how can we help DoD produce more effective solutions at the speed of the threat? BMNT is combining the Lean Methods it learned in combat with the technology expertise and speed of startups. BMNT's mission is to increase the speed at which national security organizations solve critical emerging problems. Adopting many aspects of the Lean Startup methodology pioneered by Steve Blank, the Godfather of Silicon Valley, BMNT s Managing Partner, Pete Newell, developed a mission-focused, problem-solving methodology while he was the Director of the Army s Rapid Equipping Force (REF). Leveraging H4X, the language and methodology we ve developed at BMNT and that was first prototyped as Hacking For Defense (H4D) at Stanford University and has been featured recently in the Washington Post, Forbes, Fast Company, and Foreign Policy, our goal is to hardwire you to solve your own problems. Through accelerated and improved problem-solving and procurement, our approach (which we will preview in the session) helps to reduce the costs of cyber defense; provide next-generation enterprise cyber solutions; build a culture of technological innovation; and recruit, train, and retain the cyber workforce.
