Mark Smith
South Carolina State House,
District 99
Representative Mark Smith is a fourth-generation Lowcountry native, born and raised in Bamberg, South Carolina. He learned early the values that make South Carolina strong — faith, family, hard work, and service to others. Mark has lived the American Dream — proving that no matter where you start, with perseverance and purpose, you can build a meaningful life and make a difference in your community. For more than 30 years, Mark has built and led a successful small business through McAlister-Smith Funeral Homes, serving families across the Lowcountry and Midlands. As a business owner, he has created jobs, signed paychecks, supported local communities, and helped countless families during their most difficult moments. He is currently serving his third term in South Carolina’s State House as a part-time legislator for District 99. Mark has earned a reputation as a results-driven leader who gets things done. He has championed key legislation including the Certificate of Need reform, the Telehealth Act, tort reform for restaurants and bars, and the elimination of state income tax for retired veterans. His record reflects a focus on practical, conservative solutions that improve lives and strengthen the economy such as: cutting and eliminating taxes, fighting illegal immigration, backing law enforcement, prioritizing critical infrastructure projects, and energy reform. Mark’s leadership has earned him recognition from a wide range of organizations, including Legislator of the Year from the South Carolina Fraternal Order of Police, Professional Fire Fighters Association, Conservation Voters of South Carolina, and the SC Telehealth Alliance, among others. Mark and his wife, Elayne, have been married for 32 years and live on Daniel Island with their dog, Hugo. They have three adult sons — Parker, Avery (who recently married his incredible wife MacKenzie), and Domenic — and are active members of St. Clare of Assisi Catholic Church.
