Evidence-based theories on effective governance - be it Policy Governance, Coherent Governance, or the Center for Public Education - all agree that a high-functional board must have three characteristics: organizational FOCUS, operational ALIGNMENT and institutional COMMITMENT.
This session will highlight how three districts are deliberately working towards ALIGNING the intentions and contributions of their board members so that there is a higher level of trustworthiness, and an open exchange of ideas in a conscientious and courteous manner. These and other qualities—including clarity of ownership of responsibilities (is it the board, superintendent or shared?)—are essential for a district that will accomplish their mission and make successful strides towards its vision.
