Law and ethics have impacted both policy and personal practice decisions with respect to the use of social media by schools, districts, and teachers. The trees (all the legal and ethical barriers) have led to paralyzing limitations on the valuable opportunities afforded by the amazing social media “forest.” Severely limiting or even outright prohibiting the professional use of social media results in massive lost opportunities. This presentation makes the strong case for preserving social media use and offers mitigation strategies for legal and ethical threats. The primary outcome is preventing policies and individuals from losing the valuable forest of social media for the trees of law and ethics.
