Medical Symposium: Using Regenerative Medicine to Treat Chronic Pain Emanating from the Spine (Room Skyline Ballroom W375c)

Regenerative medicine is a rapidly growing subspecialty within the field of Pain Medicine. As it is rarely part of the curriculum within a pain fellowship, most rely on weekend courses or the guidance of a colleague to learn about it. And while there is an abundance of evidence to support the use of treatments like platelet rich plasma and stem cells for a number of indications, this evidence is rarely emphasized due to the limited nature in which many beginners have to learn it. As such, there is a lack of standardization in the way regenerative medicine is utilized and practiced leading to mixed outcomes. This session will emphasize the proper indications for orthobiologics and outline the evidence to support their use.

Upon completion of this session, participants should gain strategies to:

  • Have basic knowledge of each of the various regenerative options available for use in the spine;
  • Understand the basic indications for each specific option (i.e. discogenic pain, facet-related pain, etc.);
  • Understand "best practices" guidelines for these therapies with respect to the available evidence and how the current data supports them.
