Surgery is indicated for many spinal conditions, and can show favorable outcomes in properly selected patients. Further, outcomes of spine surgery can be heavily impacted by pre-surgical treatments. How these treatments can optimize spine surgery outcomes is increasingly important to consider. It is important that the spine practitioner know the potential benefits as well as some potential for harm of pre-surgical treatments. We will explore the evidence and the role of nutrition, physical therapy, psychosocial measures, epidural steroids, selective nerve blocks and perioperative medication management in spine surgery outcomes. We will offer clinically useful information for approaching patient care in those considered candidates for spine surgery.
Upon completion of this session, participants should gain strategies to:
- Realize the potential of pre-surgical optimization in spine surgery outcomes;
- Recognize the role of an interdisciplinary approach in spine surgery optimization;
- Implement provided tools into clinical practice.
