Universal Robots has lowered the automation barrier tremendously by placing robotics within reach of even small operations that up until now have viewed robotics as too costly and complex.

The UR robots deliver all the advantages of advanced robotic automation with none of the traditional added costs associated with robot programming, set-up, and dedicated, shielded work cells. Unlike traditional industrial robots that stay hardwired in a cage, the lightweight UR robots can be moved around, automating high mix/low volume production runs. Innovative force-sensing technology makes the robot stops operating when encountering an employee, eliminating the need for safety guarding in most scenarios. Eighty percent of the thousands of UR robots worldwide operate with no safety guarding (after risk assessment), right beside human operators.

“The out-of-box experience” with a collaborative UR robot is typically less than an hour. That’s the time it takes an untrained operator to unpack the robot, mount it, and program the first simple tasks.

Programming is intuitive; users simply grab the robot arm to teach the desired movement, or use the touch screen. The Polyscope GUI runs on a Linux OS platform for easy customization of specific tasks and tools. Product portfolio includes the UR3, UR5 and UR10 robot arms named after their payloads in kilos, they all feature 0.1 mm repeatability and span in reach from 19.7” in to 51.2”.  The new compact UR3 table-top robot weighs only 24.3 lbs, but has a payload of 6.6 lbs, 360-degree rotation on all wrist joints and infinite rotation on the end joint. These unique features make UR3 the most flexible, lightweight, table-top robot to work side-by-side with employees in the market today.

The company is headquartered in Odense, Denmark, where all development and production is carried out. U.S. offices are located in New York, Ann Arbor, Los Angeles and Dallas. The UR robots are sold through distributors worldwide - in North America the distribution network includes 24 distributors and 45 integrators.
