John Macy discovered his passion for food and entertaining as a teenager when he worked a summer job catering clambakes on Martha's Vineyard. After finishing college in 1975, John started a small catering business where in 1976 he created the recipe for his savory twisted CheeseSticks. Made from multiple layers of fresh sourdough, shredded cheese, and seasoned butter, hand-twisted and baked twice, the CheeseSticks were such a hit at catered events and community fairs that John became convinced there was a broader market for them.
After a move to the East Coast, John decided to bake and sell CheeseSticks from his New York City loft apartment. He soon realized his home kitchen and small weekly batches of CheeseSticks were not enough to properly launch the business. In 1985 John opened a small bakery on 13th Street in Manhattan's East Village. In 1990 the bakery relocated west across the Hudson River to its current production facility in Northeastern New Jersey.
From a single recipe, John Wm. Macy’s family bakery has developed a full line of gourmet baked snacks distributed throughout the US and Canada, including:
- John Wm. Macy’s CheeseSticks – Original Cheddar, Garlic Romano, Dijon Swiss, Cheddar & Scallion and Melting Parmesan
- John Wm. Macy’s CheeseCrisps – Cheddar & Asiago, Melting Romano, Chipotle & Cheddar, Sesame Gruyere and Cheddar Rosemary (new in 2016)
- John Wm. Macy’s SweetSticks – Dutch Chocolate, Java Cinnamon and Madagascar Vanilla
In January 2016 John and Tim Macy were inducted into the Specialty Food Association Hall of Fame for their contributions to the specialty food industry.
Just in time for the 2016 Summer Fancy Food Show, the Company has completed a comprehensive year-long rebranding project and is introducing its new John Wm. Macy's Family Bakery logo with a completely redesigned line of retail packaging. It's products are also available in bulk foodservice package and "Classic" gift tins.
