Our story begins in Oakland, California, with our founder, James Freeman. What started as a single cart selling roasted coffee beans at the Old Oakland Farmers Market has evolved into a rich, diverse community of cafes, spanning the globe from New York to Shanghai.

As we gather at World of Coffee to discuss new frontiers of our industry, the traditional boundaries of specialty coffee are rapidly shifting. While Arabica — and even Fine Robusta — have long set the standard, we are now seeing a new wave of species and long-ignored regions reaching world competition stages and gaining recognition for their exceptional quality. Blue Bottle created the Horizon Series as an exploration of this shift — an effort to learn from emerging species and regions and to understand their potential to help build a more resilient future for coffee.
