Deer evolved eating chestnuts as their primary mast food. They have up to 2x the protein and 4x the carbs of acorns, and no bitter tasting tannins. In Kroll's tests, wild deer found the chestnuts in only an hour, even though they had never seen chestnuts ever before.
Chestnuts were the most common tree in the eastern forest, and the primary mast for deer and wildlife for thousands of years before the chestnut blight.
