Alexander Street publishes curated, discipline-focused, primary-source collections, websites, and streaming media for learning and research. We’re passionate about creating landmark online resources that help scholars and students discover and learn.

Our projects deliver previously unavailable content in ways that further research and learning. Working closely with faculty, librarians, archives, and publishers, we develop our databases to the highest academic standards. We painstakingly secure copyrights, digitize the content, index the materials meticulously using semantic fields, add supporting reference and contextual material, and then publish the resulting collections on our award-winning online platform.

Our mission is to “make silent voices heard.”

Whether it’s previously unseen plays by Pulitzer Prize winners, the full run of an important publications such as Theatre Design and Technology from USITT, or otherwise inaccessible historical archives such as Ralph Funicello's personal design archives, we love bringing otherwise “silent” and sometimes hidden gems to faculty, scholars, and students.

Experience the depth and diversity of drama in all of its forms, from the page, to the  stage, to the screen. These collections fill an important gap in scholarship by providing access to the best-known names in drama as well as works by and about often overlooked groups. In addition to cornerstone text-based resources, Alexander Street provides curated video and audio dramatic performances that give students and faculty a well-rounded view of this powerful art form. Alexander Street’s famous Semantic Indexing and uniquely powerful platform allow users to explore and analyze this material in ways that are simply impossible in paper form.

With our newest database, theatre students and researchers can now truly see “behind the scenes” of the world’s greatest dramatic performances. Performance Design Archive Online is the first comprehensive, international collection that covers all aspects of theater production design, from the 17th century through to the present day, including, scenic and set design, lighting design, sound design, costume design, makeup, and more.

We’ve received dozens and dozens of “BEST” awards from industry publications (Library Journal and others for numerous projects in all our disciplines); organizations (e.g., History News Network for North American Women's Letters and Diaries); evaluation groups (The Charleston Advisor’s various awards); and industry watchers (e.g., EContent 100: The Companies that Matter Most in the Digital Content Industry).
