Brigadier Rory Copinger-Symes was born in Gravesend, Kent, United Kingdom and joined the Royal Marines in 1983 Brigadier Copinger-Symes’s assignments include 42 Commando and 45 Commando, with deployments in Northern Ireland, the Norwegian Artic, the Mediterranean; Command of the Royal Marine Detachment aboard the HMS ENDURANCE with deployment to the South Atlantic and Antarctic Peninsula; G2, Headquarters 5 Airborne Brigade; Flag Officer Surface Flotilla as the Fleet Royal Marines Officer; Officer Commanding, Yankee Company, 45 Commando, with deployment to Sierra Leone; Chief Instructor and later Commander for the Commando Officer Training; Joint Doctrine and Concepts Center; Joint Services Command and Staff College; Chief Planner (J5) for Multinational Security Transition Command-Iraq; Deputy Chief of Staff, 3 Commando Brigade with deployment to Afghanistan; Commander, 1 Assault Group; J3, NATO Lisbon Strike Force; and Chief of Staff to Commander UK Amphibious Forces. Brigadier Copinger-Symes’s professional and academic educations include the Royal College of Defence Studies and a Master’s of Defence Studies from Cranfield University. His awards include the Joint Commander’s Commendation, the Queen’s Commendation for Valuable Service, and the United States Bronze Star Medal.
