Lt Col William H. O’Brien, IV, Commander, 453d Electronic Warfare Squadron (EWS), directs daily operations of an 86-member squadron providing Electronic Warfare (EW) support to the Combat Air Force (CAF), joint & allied warfighters, planners and Department of Defense (DoD) leaders. He leads the next generation of EW analysis, data production, threat detection & modeling generation of EW threats for combat, exercises and planning. Lt Col O’Brien provides combatant commanders with real-time EW reach-back support, deployment-ready personnel and threat database management. He commands 46 USAF, 2 foreign military and 38 civilians, directing efforts to optimize a $6M budget covering 1700 Information Technology (IT) systems, 14 contracts and 3 DoD-wide programs.
Lt Col O’Brien received a Bachelor of Design Degree in Architecture from the University of Florida and entered the Air Force in 1998 as a graduate from the USAF Officer Training School, Maxwell AFB, AL. He is a graduate of the USAF Weapons School and has led units to combat as the Squadron and Wing Weapons Officer. Lt Col O’Brien has also served as flight commander, evaluator and instructor. Before his assignment at the 453d Electronic Warfare Squadron, he was 607th AOC Combat Plans Division Deputy Chief, and Master Air Attack Plan (MAAP) Chief, where he led a 43-member joint/coalition team creating all CFC's integrated air and space plans for contingency operations in the KTO. Prior to his assignment at the 607th, Lt Col O’Brien was the Assistant Director of Operations for Integration at the 561st Joint Tactics Squadron and Instructor Weapons System Officer at the United States Air Force Weapons School, Nellis AFB, NV. He has logged more than 2,600 flying hours in T-34, T-1, T-39, AT-38, E-8, RC-135, F-16CM, F-15D and F-15E, over 2,400 hours in the B-1 and has over 1,100 hours of combat experience over Iraq and Afghanistan.
