Mike Brown is a full stack web developer with over 20 years experience. Starting out in the 1990s using Visual Basic and C++ to develop desktop software, he now focuses on creating cloud-hosted web applications exclusively for the IBM Corporate Heath and Safety Team. His most recent work has utilised both IBM Watson data analytics and machine language APIs to automate email distribution and conduct sentiment analysis. Mr. Brown’s professional career began in 1976 when he joined Her Majesty’s Royal Navy. Promoted through the ranks to Lieutenant, he graduated from the Britannia Royal Naval College Dartmouth in 1987. During his naval years, Mr. Brown specialised in Nuclear, Biological and Chemical defence on the Royal Navy’s largest amphibious warship, gaining an extensive understanding of risk management. Mr. Brown transferred to civilian life in 1993, going on to achieve a Diploma in Health and Safety and Chartered Membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health in 1999. Prior to joining IBM in 2001, Mr. Brown was a Health and Safety Risk Manager at one of the UK’s largest retail organizations. His interests in computer programming and mathematics, however, had been cemented during his years at the Royal Naval College, setting him on a course of continuous self-improvement. Developing his skills in web development, natural language processing and machine learning, Mr. Brown combined his experienced understanding of Health and Safety with his interest in software to create specialist applications that enhanced user experience and organisational efficiency. After initially joining IBM as a Health and Safety Advisor, he has, for the last ten years, been employed exclusively in an application development role. Mr. Brown has been married to Elaine Brown, a former radio operator in the Women’s Royal Naval Service, for 39 years, with three children and a grandchild on the way.
