Matthew Ortel holds a Master of Science degree in Explosives Engineering from Missouri University of Science and Technology (MS&T). His area of study focused on optimizing large linear shaped charges. He has authored and co-authored publications through the International Society of Explosives Engineers and the International Symposium on the Interaction of the Effects of Munitions with Structures. He has a diverse background in explosive testing, ranging from small charges (<1lbs net explosive weight) to full-scale tests with several tons of explosives. He has experience as a driller, shot loader, and equipment operator in underground hard rock mines. . While working for APT, he has developed explosive safety site plans using DoD quantity distance standards. He has also used IMESAFR to perform quantitative risk assessments for commercial explosive operations.
