Matthew started brewing about 15 years ago. He received a PhD in microbiology from the University of Florida in 2009, and in 2014 he became owner and head brewer at Handsome Beer Company in Hyattsville, Md. After Handsome closed in 2016, he opened Patent Brewing Company in Maryland, which focuses on mixed fermentation and serves as a yeast depository for local breweries. Through Patent, he opened a consulting service for regional breweries. Matthew gives talks on yeast maintenance and care and is currently the author of the blog A Ph.D. in Beer as well as the cohost of the Milk the Funk podcast.
