James Bergen received his BA in Mathematics & Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley in 1975 and his doctorate in Biophysics and Theoretical Biology from the University of Chicago in 1981. He joined Sarnoff in 1982 as a member of technical staff and was appointed Senior Member of Technical Staff in 1991 and and Distiguished Member of Technical Staff in 2003. Sarnoff became a division of SRI in 2011 and Dr. Bergen was appointed Senior Principal Research Scientist in the new organization. He has published numerous highly cited papers in image processing and pattern recognition; his paper on Hierarchical Model-based Motion Estimation has been cited over 1500 times.
