Chad Gravelle
Chief Scientist
National Weather Service Operations Proving Ground in Kansas City, MO, NOAA

Chad Gravelle is currently the Chief Scientist, and previously the GOES-R Satellite Liaison, for the National Weather Service (NWS) Operations Proving Ground in Kansas City, MO where he leads the development and implementation of forecaster evaluations for promising new NWS tools and capabilities. While he was the Operations Proving Ground's GOES-R Satellite Liaison, Chad collaborated with NWS forecasters to improve the analysis and forecasting of meteorological threats using GOES-R imagery while leading applied research on integrating multiple high-resolution datasets for the operational warning decision making process. Chad has a B.S. degree in meteorology from the State University of New York at Brockport and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in meteorology from Saint Louis University. While at Saint Louis University, his Ph.D. research developed a methodology to objectively identify conceptual model false alarms to distinguish statistically significant features in Northeast U.S. heavy snow events. Chad was the lead developer of the Saint Louis University Cooperative Institute for Precipitation System's (CIPS) Analog Guidance which is used by NWS Forecast Offices as a threat-based forecaster support resource. He was also the focal point on smaller research projects that assisted NWS forecasters in identifying CWA-centric high-impact weather events. In 2012, Chad was recognized for his research and development of the CIPS Analog Guidance as he was the co-recipient of the National Weather Association T. Theodore Fujita Research Achievement Award.
