Susan "Suzy" Scott, MSN, RN, WOCN, is currently the patient safety/quality improvement educator with the University of Tennessee College of Medicine, Office of Graduate Medical Education in Memphis, Tennessee. Additionally, she serves as an affiliate faculty member in the Center for Health Systems Improvement (CHSI) and instructor in the College of Nursing with UTHSC. Susan recently retired from the Veterans Health Administration (VA) after 34½ years of federal service. She served as the acute care specialist for the South Central VA Health Care Network in Ridgeland, Mississippi, which includes oversight of 10 VA medical centers in eight states. Susan has published and presented both nationally and internationally on the prevention of pressure ulcers in the operating room. Susan was recognized by the American Academy of Nurses in the Raise the Voice Campaign. As part of the campaign, the Academy is showcasing stories of nurse “Edge Runners” – the practical innovators who are transforming America's health care system through nursing solutions. The "Perioperative Pressure Ulcer Prevention Program (PPUPP): An innovative effort to prevent pressure ulcers in surgical patients" showcases the Memphis VA nursing research and aggressive approach to improving patient safety and outcomes. She developed the “Scott Triggers” an evidence based tool used to identify high risk in surgical patients.
