JSC Chapter of Engineers Without Borders


James R. (Jake) Mireles is president of the Engineers Without Borders - Johnson Space Center chapter. He joined EWB-JSC in the spring of 2013, served as chapter vice president from June 2014 and became chapter president in January 2016. With EWB he has traveled twice to Giika, Kenya in Meru County, Kenya in support of the chapter's water distribution and biogas digester project which serves a small educational campus of 30 - 40 junior high school age boys who would otherwise be on the streets. EWB-JSC also is currently building a water distribution and purification system in Maejanoi, Thailand and has previously worked in Mexico and Rwanda. He has supported EWB-JSC with CAD design in SketchUp, with virtual reality design evaluation utilizing the HTC Vive, and as a worker bee. Professionally, Mr. Mireles joined KBRwyle in June 2015 as a business systems analyst and additionally supports a small measure of virtual reality work in data analytics and as lead of the JSC Virtual Reality Community of Practice. Prior to KBRwyle, he spent ten years with Barrios Technology and the better part of the ten years before Barrios as an independent database consultant. He has been in software development for nearly 25 years. Beyond EWB, he has volunteered extensively in the community, including 15 years (1991 – 2006) with Interfaith Caring Ministries of which six were on the board and three as vice president. He has been a chess coach at Clear Lake City Elementary since 2013. Mr. Mireles holds a bachelor of arts degree in American history from the University of Texas at Austin (1983).
