Neil Greenstein is a third generation grocer and owner of the Brookdale ShopRite and the ShopRite of Newark. In addition, Neil is a member of the Board of Directors for Wakefern Food Corporation the National Grocers Association. His grandparents opened the family’s first supermarket in Bloomfield, NJ, in 1948 and joined the Wakefern cooperative in 1952. Neil’s father would later run the Brookdale ShopRite and Neil recalls working in the store as a teenager, doing everything from sweeping floors to pushing carts, stocking shelves and cutting cold cuts. Neil received his degree in accounting from George Washington University and went on to work as an accountant specializing in real estate at KPMG, an international business accounting firm, for more than a decade before returning to the family business. Today he works closely alongside his associates in a career he loves. His family’s two ShopRite stores employ more than 900 people and he calls his stores “supermarkets with a heart.” The newest location, the ShopRite of Newark, opened in September 2015 in the heart of the Central Ward, bringing 360 full- and part-time jobs to the city. Newark leaders have credited Neil for being a true community partner, giving of his time and resources to become an integral part of the city and the redevelopment of Newark. Neil, meanwhile, credits his associates for their commitment to the business and the communities where the stores are located. Neil and his wife, Lesley, reside in Union County, NJ have three sons.
