Karl E. Yrjanainen, PE, CPD, LEED AP BD+C, is the Plumbing Engineering Principal at HDR Architecture in Lawrenceville, New Jersey. HDR specializes in engineering, architecture, environmental, and construction services and is a leader in the science and technology market, specializing in integrated laboratory programming, planning, architecture, and engineering for the most advanced science and technology facilities in the world. Karl has extensive experience with laboratory, medical, vivarium, and process facilities ranging from 200 to 1.4 million square feet for various academic, government, and pharmaceutical clients. In addition to typical plumbing and fire protection systems, he is experienced with various specialty process systems and specialty fire protection systems. Over the past several years he has developed experience with Biosafety Level 2, 3, and 4 systems, being part of the team that designed the world’s largest and most complex biocontainment facility for USAMRIID. He has written articles for ASPE as well as presented topics at ASPE Technical Symposiums. He is on the State of New Jersey Plumbing Subcode Advisory Board and is a member of ASPE’s Technical & Research Committee. In addition, Karl serves as an Adjunct Instructor of Environmental Systems at Drexel University and is the current Vice President, Legislative of ASPE’s New Jersey Chapter.
