Research Plant Pathologist
USDA-ARS, U.S. Vegetable Laboratory
Dr. Kai-Shu Ling received his Ph.D. in Plant Pathology (virology) from Cornell University in 1995. He has been a Research Plant Pathologist at the USDA-Agricultural Research Service, U.S. Vegetable Laboratory in Charleston, SC since 2004. He has developed a close working relationship with vegetable seed industry and greenhouse tomato growers in the U.S. and around the world on seed health testing and identification and management of emerging virus and viroid diseases on vegetable crops. Dr. Ling is a lead scientist for the ARS project on biological, genetic and genomic-based disease management for vegetable crops. He is the director of a recently approved ARS Grand Challenge project in developing a holistic cropping system to enhance tomato productivity under protected-environment. He currently serves as a co-project director in leading a USAID-sponsored cassava whitefly management project in Africa and has served as project director or co-project directors for a number of USDA-NIFA supported research projects. He has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles and served as a mentor for numerous visiting scholars and students.
