General Manager
SEPTA

Jeffrey D. Knueppel is the tenth General Manager to serve SEPTA. Prior to being named to this position, he was Deputy General Manager with an organization comprised of two Divisions – Operations and Engineering, Maintenance, & Construction as well as several Staff Support Departments. With a career at SEPTA now spanning 28 years, he joined the Authority as an entry level Structural Engineer. His career path within the organization led him to manage an in-house construction group before serving as Assistant Chief Engineer, Chief Engineer at the age of 36, and Assistant General Manager/Chief Engineer for EM&C. As General Manager, he is now committed to concentrating on the fundamentals to focus SEPTA on Building the Future. This is a corporate vision that include five areas of strategic effort – customer experience, transit as a business, employee development, investing in the system, and safety as a foundation. Among the highlights – the rollout of SEPTA Key a transformative fare payment program that will bring reloadable contact chip fare card technology and convenience to all SEPTA mode services; two safety awareness programs – Never Too Busy For Safety – for Employees and Make the Safe Choice for Customers along with the launch of Positive Train Control (PTC) on Regional Rail; and Rebuilding the System –a multi-year capital initiative tackling the backlog of state of good repair, facility improvement, and fleet upgrade projects. With funding from Pennsylvania Act 89 and the Federal FAST Act, the Authority has been able to double the activities of its capital program in just two years. A graduate of the Cooper Union for the Advancement of Science and Art in New York, Jeff holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in Civil Engineering and is a registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He has been recognized by the American Society of Civil Engineers – Philadelphia Section with the Civil Engineer Award for 2015.
