Jim has over 35 years of experience in railroad and geotechnical engineering. His background includes front-line track maintenance supervision, track diagnostics, geotechnical design, railway asset management and specialty railway contracting. Jim has combined his practical and academic experience to become one of the leading practitioners in the field of Railway Geotechnics. Jim formed HyGround Engineering in August 2005 to provide problem-solving and analysis expertise directly to railroad operators. Jim pioneered methods of investigation and analyses to manage railway track substructure performance, and his experience spans the heavy-axle freight, high-speed passenger, and transit environments. Dr. Hyslip has engineering degrees from Bucknell University, the University of Pittsburgh, and the University of Massachusetts (Amherst), and is a registered Professional Engineer. He has authored or co-authored over 30 publications related to railway analysis and track performance issues and is co-author of the 2016 textbook Railway Geotechnics. He is a member of ASCE, AREMA, and TRB Committee on Railway Maintenance.
