David’s career in the fire service started in 1968 as a junior volunteer member in the Chesterfield (VA) Fire Department. After a brief career stint in the Richmond Fire Bureau, he was hired as a career firefighter in Chesterfield County (VA). During his 28 years with Chesterfield, he served in various roles before retiring in 2001 as a senior battalion chief. After retirement, David served as a volunteer firefighter, taught for Chesterfield County, the Virginia Fire Marshal’s Academy, and the Virginia Community College System. In 2008, David came out of retirement and became the fire marshal for the City of Richmond, a position he still holds today.
