At DSM, McBurney provides global leadership in developing, implementing and executing nutrition science and communications strategies. He regularly writes on science and science communications and, in his current role, innovated science-based social media activities at DSM. McBurney is an adjunct professor in the Friedman School of Nutrition Science & Policy at Tufts University, has held academic appointments at the University of Toronto, University of Alberta and Michigan State University, and was founding department head of the Department of Nutrition and Food Science at Texas A&M University. He has studied or had formal relations with nine universities, including Carleton, where he earned a bachelor science in biology/ecology, and Cornell, where he earned a master of science and a doctorate in nutrition. McBurney is actively involved with the American Society for Nutrition, Institute for Food Technologists, International Food Information Council, International Life Science Institute, Council for Responsible Nutrition, New York Academy of Science and National Association of Science Writers. Currently he serves as chair of the Cornell University Division of Nutrition Sciences External Advisory Board and as an industry representative (non-voting member) of the FDA Food Advisory Committee.
