Delia M. Carlyle is currently Councilwoman of the Ak-Chin Indian Community Council. During her years on the Council, she has served in the capacity of Chairman, Vice-Chairman and Secretary. Ms. Carlyle also serves as the Chair of the Arizona Indian Gaming Association. Ms. Carlyle is the first Native American woman to be inducted into the Arizona Democratic Hall of Fame and the first recipient of the Phyllis Bigpond Lifetime Achievement Award. Ms. Carlyle joined the staff at the Ak-Chin Community Center, currently known as the Service Center, in 1978 and was appointed its Director in 1994. Her professional and political service to the Community Center and the Community Council enable her to assist with creating and implanting programs in areas housing, health, transportation, social services, education and community development, all of which directly benefit her Community. Ms. Carlyle is active outside of her own Community having served as the Community’s representative on a number of boards and committees. Locally she served as a member of the Maricopa Unified School District and as a member of the Maricopa Precinct #30 Election Board. She currently serves as the Inspector for Ak-Chin Precinct #77 Election Board. Ms. Carlyle graduated from Maricopa High School in 1974, attended Haskell Indian Junior College in Lawrence, KS and is currently attending Central Arizona College. The health care field is one of her most enduring interests. At one point, she received her Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification and worked at the Community’s Fire Department during her off hours. As a community and civic leader, Ms. Carlyle, has been recognized many times for her service and contributions. Despite her many accomplishments, Ms. Carlyle firmly believes her greatest achievements are her children and grandchildren.
