Jeffrey Shupp




Dr. Jeffrey Shupp is the Director of the Burn Center at MedStar Washington Hospital Center and a staff surgeon in the Burns/Trauma section of surgery. Dr. Shupp is also the lead investigator at the Firefighters' Burn and Surgical Research Laboratory and the Director of Burn Research at MedStar Health Research Institute. He is an associate professor of biomedical engineering at The Catholic University of America and an associate professor of surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Dr. Shupp chairs the Institutional Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee, the Institutional Biosafety Committee and is a member of many other administrative and regulatory committees within MedStar Health. He specializes in treating burns, trauma to the skin, including electrical and chemical injuries, complex wounds, and other skin disorders that result in skin loss. Dr. Shupp received his undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland and his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia. He then joined MedStar Washington Hospital Center to complete a residency in general surgery and a three-year fellowship in burn surgery. From his first encounters, the mechanisms of burn injuries, as well as the care for burn patients, became a huge interest of his. He immediately tailored his background in molecular biology research to focus on many aspects of clinical and translational burn and wound healing research. His clinical and research interests include innovative technologies for grafting and skin coverage as well as finding new strategies to improve the outcomes and care of individual patients. Dr. Shupp's goal is for anyone with a burn injury to have access to MedStar Washington Hospital Center for care.
