Joseph Brown

Joseph E. Brown began his career in the fire service in 1994 and served as a volunteer Firefighter/EMT-A for eleven years with the Hampton (VA) Division of Fire Rescue. Leaving his career as an IT manager, he was hired as a career member of the department in 2004; where he has served in the roles of both firefighter/medic and as a suppression officer. Joe currently serves as a suppression captain, as a crewmember of the marine emergency response team, and was recently appointed as the dive team coordinator. Joe earned an associate’s degree in fire science from Columbia Southern University and a bachelor’s degree in organizational leadership from Waldorf University. While attending the 2010 Virginia Fire Officers Academy, Joe attended a presentation by the Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN) regarding the awareness and prevention of cancer. This class, along with a suspicious and reoccurring spot on his body, motivated him to get a medical exam that eventually led to a cancer diagnosis. Knowledge in Joe’s case made a difference; and a grateful Joe Brown strives to increase cancer awareness within the fire service by willingly assisting the FCSN in its mission to increase awareness and prevent cancer in the fire service.
