Murrey began his fire service career with the Beckley (WV) Fire Department in 1979 and was hired by the Virginia Beach (VA) Fire Department in 1983. Prior to his retirement from Virginia Beach in 2006, he served as safety officer, health and safety officer, incident safety officer, infection control officer, operations captain and battalion chief. After retirement, Murrey was hired by the West Virginia University Extension Services located in Morgantown where he served as the Director of Fire Service Extension and the Director of the State Fire Academy. In 2010, he accepted a position with the NIOSH Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program in Morgantown where he serves as an investigator for line-of-duty deaths and significant injury incidents. Murrey has served as chairman and past chairman of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Fire Service Section executive board and is secretary of the NFPA Fire Service Occupational Safety and Health Technical Committee. He also served as a member of the NFPA Incident Management Functional Position Professional Qualifications Technical Committee and is an adjunct faculty member and course developer for the National Fire Academy. Murrey is the co-author of the book entitled, Emergency Incident Risk Management and is a contributing author for the NFPA Fire Department Occupational Health and Safety Standards Handbook; Managing Fire and Rescue Services (International City/County Management Association) and the 2008 NFPA Fire Protection Handbook. Murrey has a master’s degree in occupational health and safety; and associate and bachelor’s degrees from Marshall University.
