Sonya Shannon recently retired from her position as the Vice President of Human Resources at Busch Gardens Tampa Bay and Adventure Island. Sonya joined Busch Gardens in 1979 as a Games Host in the Merchandise Department. She worked in the Merchandise Department for two years before accepting a training position in Human Resources. In 1999, Sonya was promoted to Director, Human Resources and served in that position until her promotion to VP in 2015.
Over her 38-year career, Sonya was instrumental in the creation of many leadership training programs across Busch Gardens. She co-designed and co-developed leadership programs and presented at eleven theme parks to develop leaders through these extensive training programs. She also designed Guest Service training programs and led the Performance Management Strategies for both Busch Gardens and Adventure Island. She continues to serve as a mentor to young professionals.
Sonya was in the Leadership Tampa class of 2004 and then served two years on their Executive Board. She also served on the board of the Tampa Bay Boys and Girls Clubs. Sonya has a Bachelor’s degree in Personnel and Global Human Resources and a Master’s Degree in Management and Organizational Development. She also holds a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification and also achieved the Society for Human Resource Management Senior Certified Professional certification.
