Dr. Sarani is an actively practicing surgeon at George Washington University Hospital (GWUH) who holds board certification in critical care surgery and general surgery as well as holding an Associate Professorship at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. After completing his medical school and general surgery training at George Washington University, he completed his fellowship in trauma and critical care surgery and practiced at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pennsylvania where he established and directed rapid response teams at each hospital. His experience with program development has led him to be the Director of the Center for Trauma and Critical Care at George Washington University Hospital where he was charged with obtaining the Level 1 Trauma Center designation. Under his leadership, he created the trauma intensive care unit (ICU), the George Washington University Transfer Center of which he is the director, and an aeromedical program partnership. In addition, Dr. Sarani is the co-medical director of the ICU at George Washington University, vice-chair of the Washington DC Chapter of the ACS Committee on Trauma, and vice-chair of the Society of Critical Care Medicine’s Fundamentals of Critical Care Support Committee. His research interests include rapid response systems; measuring and optimizing teamwork and communication in time-critical events; measurement of coagulopathy following injury; and reconstruction of the chest following severe injury
