Marty has been called a visionary, pioneer and expert organic agriculture and food systems. He began growing organically in 1972. In 1976, he started Bellevue Gardens Organic Farm. In 1987, he helped form Florida Organic Growers & Quality Certification Services and was its first executive director for over 30 years. He helped start and served on boards of the Organic Trade Association (OTA), Southern Sustainable Ag Working Group (SSAWG), Accredited Certifier Assoc,. Organic Materials Review Institution (OMRI), the National Sustainable Ag Coalition (NSAC), the Agricultural Justice Project and many others. In addition to education, policy and food system work in the U.S., he has worked globally helping farmers and farm workers in developing countries to advance organic and sustainable ag as well as organic certification. He was named one of the top 20 people who most influenced the development of the organic industry. He has also produced several educational videos and films with Little Bean Productions.
