Mr. Avera is a first year doctoral student and a graduate research assistant in the Department of Counseling.  Mr. Avera co-authored a multi-year grant issued to UTSA from the Office of Juvenile and Delinquency Prevention to study the long-term impact of youth mentoring on adult criminality and educational achievement.  He is currently working on this study.  Mr. Avera also participated in a formative evaluation of a local business-mentoring program called the InspireU, commissioned by the San Antonio Mayor’s Office.   As a graduate student, Mr. Avera has presented at state and national conferences on topics of transgender issues, mentoring, mindfulness, peer mentoring, and program evaluation.  Mr. Avera’s clinical experience includes working with a variety of populations at the Jewish Family Services of San Antonio and children and adolescents at the Children’s Bereavement Center in San Antonio.
