Stephen Johnson is director of R&D for The Timken Company. Named to the position in 2014, Johnson leads a team that is responsible for providing enabling technologies and cost-effective support to the company's business units. Through focusing on market alignment and capabilities in core competencies, Johnson and his team identify and propose new technologies that offer value-added opportunities for the company. He previously served in several technology related director level roles from 2006 to 2014. After joining Timken in 1975 as a technical apprentice, Johnson held several operational roles. He subsequently accumulated 15 years' experience in research and development, specializing in precision machine tool metrology and ultra-high speed grinding systems. During 8 years with the company's aerospace business, Johnson established and led technology initiatives in support of new product development programs related to gas turbine engines and helicopter transmissions. An active member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Johnson has spoken at conferences on subjects ranging from ultra-high speed grinding to aerospace mechanical systems technologies. He is a member of the board of editors of IRI’s Research and Technology Management journal, on the advisory board of the Materials and Manufacturing Center at Penn State University as well as the board of trustees of the Canton Symphony Orchestra. Johnson holds a bachelor's degree in manufacturing systems and a doctorate in advanced grinding technology, both from Coventry University in the United Kingdom.
