STEM, Science, and Math Teacher
Whitfield School
Carrie Wilson Herndon teaches at Whitfield School in Granite City, Il. She routinely presents on the topics of integrating math, science, and STEM at local, national, and international conferences. As a Montessori trained teacher, Carrie uses the environment of her surroundings and the innate curiosity of her students to develop engaging lessons. In the past year Carrie has developed a farm based STEM program that incorporates robotics with chickens, apiaries, and gardens. Carrie feels that, “beautiful lessons unfold when there is a marriage between math and science.” She actively seeks ways in which to foster this marriage while supporting student curiosity through the use of data collection and analysis and robotics. As an active grant writer, Carrie has secured $45,000 in funding for her unique ideas in the classroom. She has received awards for her innovative teaching ideas including the 2017 Vernier Award for Innovative Use of Technology.
