Michael Orr oversees the City of Cambridge's waste diversion programs, with the ultimate goal of achieving a 30 percent reduction of trash by 2020 and 80 percent reduction by 2050, with 2008 as a baseline. With a $1 million budget, he oversaw the expansion of curbside composting to 25,000 households in 2018. Prior to serving as director, Mr. Orr served as the waste reduction program manager for Cambridge, overseeing the curbside compost pilot for 5,200 households, as well as the city's plastic bag and polystyrene ordinances. Before joining the city, MR. Orr served as the sustainability coordinator for Lesley University, where he assisted in reducing food waste by 25 percent and increased the recycling rate from 35 percent to 46 percent.
