VADM Brian B. Brown, USN
Commander, Naval Information Forces
Vice Adm. Brian Brown is a 1986 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy and received a Bachelor of Science in Oceanography. He holds a Master of Science in Oceanography from the University of California San Diego and a Master of Science in Meteorology and Physical Oceanography from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School. Upon commissioning, he initially served as a surface warfare officer and transferred to naval oceanography in 1990. He currently serves as a member of the Navy’s Information Warfare community. He is also qualified to wear the U.S. Air Force Space Operations Badge. As a flag officer, Brown commanded the Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command, served as deputy commander, Joint Functional Component Command for Space, U.S. Strategic Command, and directed programming for information warfare capabilities as director, Warfare Integration (OPNAV N2N6F) on the staff of the Chief of Naval Operations. In 2014, he was appointed as the head of the Navy’s Space Cadre. At sea, Brown served aboard USS Frederick (LST 1184) as a deck division and navigation/administration officer. As an oceanographer, he served as mobile environmental team officer on the staff of Commander, Destroyer Squadron 31; as battle force oceanographer/scheduler on the staff of Commander, Carrier Group 8 aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71); and, as fleet oceanographer on the staff of Commander, U.S. 6th Fleet aboard USS La Salle (AGF 3) in Gaeta, Italy. Ashore, Brown commanded the Naval Atlantic Meteorology and Oceanography Facility Jacksonville and the Naval Oceanographic Office. Other shore tours include operations officer, Naval Pacific Meteorology and Oceanography Facility San Diego; assignment/placement officer and assistant oceanography community manager, Navy Personnel Command; deputy commander, Naval Oceanography Operations Command; executive officer, Naval Oceanographic Office; undersea warfare program manager for Commander, Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command; and, executive assistant to the oceanographer and navigator of the Navy, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations (OPNAV N2/N6E). In June 2018, he assumed command of Naval Information Forces.
