James Hamblin
Senior Editor
The Atlantic

James Hamblin is a writer and senior editor at The Atlantic magazine. A physician and comedian by training, he writes the health column and hosts the acclaimed health video series If Our Bodies Could Talk. His writing for the magazine’s website attracts at least one million readers every month. Hamblin’s work also has been featured in/on The New York Times, Politico magazine, NPR, BBC, MSNBC, New York magazine, Slate, The Awl, and even mentioned in passing on The Colbert Report. TIME named him among the 140 people to follow on Twitter in 2014, and BuzzFeed called him "the most delightful MD ever." Greatist named him among its "Most Influential People in Health and Fitness," and Refinery29 named him among their "30 Men to Watch in 2015." After graduating from medical school in 2009 as president of his class at Indiana University, Hamblin worked as a physician for three years, in medical residency in the Harvard and UCLA healthcare systems. He also trained in improv comedy at the iO Theatre in Chicago and Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in LA, before leaving medical practice to marry his creative disposition with his medical training by joining The Atlantic to develop a health section—which, during his tenure, has gone from the least-read to the most-read section of the digital magazine. Hamblin has been the subject of profiles in Columbia Journalism Review, Journal of the American College of Radiology, and Capital New York.
