A native of Arlington, VA, Commander Johnson graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1997 and earned a master’s degree in Systems Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School in 2013. Commander Johnson began flight training in September of 1997 and was designated a Naval Aviator in May of 1999. Upon completion of UH-3H Fleet Replacement Pilot Training in November 1999, Commander Johnson reported to Helicopter Combat Support Squadron TWO (HC-2), Naval Air Station Norfolk, VA, for his initial sea tour. Between 1999 and 2003 Commander Johnson served as the Detachment Two Operations Officer in the 5th fleet AOR and as the Squadron Quality Assurance Officer. Subsequent sea duty assignments include a tour as Safety Officer aboard USS SAIPAN (LHA-2), where he qualified as Officer of the Deck (underway). Commander Johnson also served as plank-owner of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron TWO TWO (HSC-22). As a Department Head at Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron TWO SIX (HSC-26), Commander Johnson deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as the Detachment One Officer in Charge, and also served and Squadron Maintenance Officer. Most recently, Commander Johnson served as the Executive and Commanding Officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron TWO EIGHT during which time the Dragon Whales won three consecutive Battle Efficiency Awards. Ashore, Commander Johnson served as an MH-60S Fleet Replacement Squadron instructor pilot at Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron THREE (HSC 3) and as the Commander Naval Air Forces Search and Rescue Evaluator. Commander Johnson’s Joint Assignments include the Joint Enabling Capabilities Command where he served as a joint operations planner deploying in support of Operation Pacific Passage and numerous USCENTCOM exercises Commander Johnson’s personal decorations include: Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal (individual action), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.
