Captain Jason Burns is a native of Alexandria, Virginia. A 1993 graduate of San Diego State University, he received his commission through the Navy Reserve Officers Training Corps program. He earned a Masters of Arts in International Relations and Strategic Studies from the Naval War College, Newport Rhode Island in 2007. Captain Burns served in several operational and training squadrons including Helicopter Anti-Submarine Light FOUR FOUR (HSL-44), Helicopter Anti-Submarine Light FOUR ONE (HSL-41), and Helicopter Anti-Submarine Light FOUR NINE (HSL-49). His afloat assignments have included deployments in USS Conolly (DD 981), USS Scott (DDG 996), USS Stephen W. Groves (FFG 29), USS Cape St. George (CG 71), USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) as Aide and Flag Lieutenant to Commander, Carrier Group THREE, USS Bunker Hill (CG 52), and USS Nimitz (CVN 68) as Navigator. Additionally, he served as Executive and Commanding Officer of Helicopter Anti-Submarine Light FOUR NINE in San Diego, CA. Ashore and staff assignments include Strategic Planner, country Action Officer, and Executive Assistant in the Joint Staff’s Strategic Plans and Policy Division (J5). Captain Burns’ awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal, Joint Service Commendation Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy/Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various unit and campaign decorations.
