CDR Jeff Heames, USN




Commander Jeff Heames is the son of a career Naval officer and hails from Sierra Vista, Arizona. He was commissioned in 1996 from Officer Candidate School. A graduate of the University of San Diego, he holds a bachelor’s degree in International Relations and a master’s degree in Global Leadership. He is also a 2012 graduate of the Australian Command and Staff College and holds a masters degree in Military Studies conferred from the Australian National University. His at sea assignments include first lieutenant in USS Valley Forge (CG 50); assistant operations officer in Destroyer Squadron Twenty-one (Desron 21); chief engineer in USS Howard (DDG 83); combat systems and ballistic missile defense officer in Destroyer Squadron Fifteen (Desron 15); and executive officer on USS Preble (DDG 88). He commanded USS Preble (DDG 88). Assignments ashore include executive assistant to the deputy director at the Missile Defense Agency in Arlington, Virginia and surface warfare detailer in the Surface Warfare Assignments Branch (Pers-41), Navy Personnel Command, Millington, Tennessee. Commander Heames currently serves as the assistant chief of staff for operations, training and readiness (N3/N7) at the recently established Surface and Mine Warfighting Development Command in San Diego, California. His personal decorations include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal and various other personal, unit and service awards. He is the 2015 recipient of the Secretary of the Navy Innovation Leadership award and co-author of the professional naval book, “Division Officer’s Guide,” 12th Edition.
