Dr. Gopal is responsible for advanced space, software and cyber systems within Hughes DISD, including protected communications, hosted satellite payloads, HTS systems and resilient architectures. As a member of the system design team for a LEO broadband system he has pioneered the use of 4G/LTE and IP network technologies for NGSO constellations. He earlier served as network design lead for Transformational Satellite (TSAT) space segment and was on the SPACEWAY® 3 (onboard L2 processing) architecture and Mobile Satellite systems (Thuraya, ICO, Teledesic), development teams. He was the chief architect and software manager for the SPACEWAY, a $1.8B development, Network Operations Control Center. Dr. Gopal represents Hughes in Satellite Industry Association (SIA). As a member of the US President’s NSTAC Satellite Task Force 2009, he co-authored the report on commercial satellite communications and cyber security and has also served on several technical program committees. Dr. Gopal, having received BE (Hons.) EE from BITS, Pilani and PhD CS from Vanderbilt University, has published more than 35 peer-reviewed technical papers on topics ranging from satellites, software, and networking, and holds 5 patents on satellite systems. Dr. Gopal represents Hughes in Satellite Industry Association (SIA).
