Danny Werfel served twice as head of the Internal Revenue Service, first as Acting Commissioner in 2013 and later as the 50th Commissioner from 2023 to 2025. During his most recent tenure, he led a historic modernization of the IRS, including a major hiring expansion, rapid deployment of digital services, and management reforms that delivered record improvements in customer service, processing speed, and revenue collection. He also spearheaded the development and launch of Direct File, overcoming longstanding institutional and technical barriers and bringing the issue of free tax filing to the center of national policy debate. Before returning to government, Danny was Global Leader of Boston Consulting Group’s Public Sector practice. Earlier in his federal career, he held senior roles at the Office of Management and Budget and served as a Trial Attorney in the Department of Justice. He is currently Executive in Residence at Johns Hopkins, a Distinguished Fellow at Duke University, writes a monthly column for Bloomberg, and sits on the Advisory Boards of alliant and Clipbook.
