Associate Professor of Special Education
George Mason University
Margaret Weiss, PhD, is an associate professor of special education in the Division of Special Education and disAbility Research at George Mason University. Before completing her PhD at the University of Virginia, Dr. Weiss was a special education teacher at the elementary, middle and high school levels. She taught as a self-contained classroom teacher, a co-teacher, and department chair in North Carolina, New Hampshire, and Virginia. Dr. Weiss’s main areas of research are in co-teaching and pre-service teacher preparation and she has published this research in multiple peer-reviewed journals. With a colleague, she has developed a model of co-teaching that incorporates three elements, including specially designed instruction, and that clearly identifies the active role of the special education teacher. Dr. Weiss has served as President of the Teacher Education Division of the Council for Exceptional Children and has recently worked with administrators and teachers to improve practice in delivering SDI to students with disabilities through workshops and coaching.
